Looking Inward, Seeing Outward

A focus on talent

As leaders, we are always looking outward, positioning our organizations for sustainability and growth against an evolving market and competitive landscape. But successful leaders invest just as much time, money, and energy working on the inner dynamics of their business, the cornerstone around which everything else is built: their team. We invite you to join us at the 2021 Alliance Summit to spend some time looking inward at your personnel and purpose.

Leaders who take the time to invest in their people see growth in all other key performance metrics. Firms reporting high levels of employee engagement also reported lower turnover, improvement in quality of work, and higher levels of connection to the organization’s mission. Successful firms know how to foster an inclusive culture that inspires, empowers, and engages.

During this event, we will discuss finding top talent, cultivating true connections, building a thriving culture, and nurturing the future leaders on your team.

Topics include:

  • Evolving Client Expectations
  • Talent Acquisition
  • A Panel of Young Professionals
  • Purposefully Re-Imagining Your Culture
  • Nurturing Your Talent

Detailed Agenda

 Monday, April 19

10:00 AM CT: Opening Session & Alliance Insights: Industry Trends

Kick off your Summit experience with Tom Livergood, CEO and Founder of The Family Wealth Alliance, unpacking the latest industry trends.

10:50 AM CT: Morning Break

11:00 AM CT: Our New Reality

We are in a transformative time in the family wealth industry. Clients’ expectations are shifting and leading this change. Clients today expect a lot from their advisors: a custom-tailored experience, seamless technology, team diversity, ESG expertise, and flexibility in how you work together.

In this session, we will hear from true industry experts on how client expectations are shifting and implications of recent industry trends, including:

  • an increased focus on social responsibility and green investing;
  • the complications of generational wealth planning;
  • balancing holistic service models while maintaining profitability; and
  • using technology to optimize family office & scale.

Speakers

  • Kristen Bauer, CEO, Laird Norton Wealth Management
  • Robert (Bobby) Stover, Jr., Americas Family Enterprise and Family Office Leader, EY
  • Moderated by Shannon Kennedy, Global President of BMO Family Office

11:50 AM CT: Peer Groups: Client Expectations

Summit attendees will join facilitated peer groups (Zoom rooms) discussing the following questions:

  • How has technology evolved in your firm over the last year?
  • What ESG reporting capabilities does your firm have for clients?
  • What are you clients’ expectations on the diversity of your team?
  • How are you navigating the demands of the next generation clients?

12:35 PM CT: Morning Break

1:30 PM CT: Talent Acquisition: Finding the Employee of the Future

We hear consistently from Alliance members that the search for new talent in this industry is an ongoing challenge.  In search of solutions, innovative leaders are examining the way they recruit talent and starting to think outside the box. What if you looked outside the industry for transferable skills? How do you identify those skills and where do you start?

In this session, we will unpack identifying transferable skills and building a pipeline of diverse and viable candidates.

Speakers:

  • Leslie Y. Tabor, Managing Director, Business Consulting Services, Charles Schwab Advisor Services
  • Steve Cohen, Executive Recruiter, Intel Corporation
  • Laurel Eschbach, HR Manager, Market Street Trust Company

2:30 PM CT: Afternoon Break

6:00 PM CT: Executive Mixer & Wine Tasting

You are invited to join us for a complimentary wine tasting with Madrigal Family Winery. A tasting kit with 5 wines will be mailed to your house prior to the event. During the tasting all participants will be broken up into smaller groups to enjoy tasting the wines led by a winemaker from Madrigal and have a chance to network and interact with fellow Summit attendees.

Tuesday, April 20th

10:00 AM CT: The Talent: A Panel of Young Professionals

Mentoring is a long-standing and increasingly popular tool for supporting personal development. Many family wealth firms have seen success in reverse-mentoring programs that allow executives to learn from junior staff. In this group-style reverse mentoring exercise, we will hear from three rising stars from the Alliance Young Professionals Network on their experience working and growing in this industry.

Speakers

  • Abigail George, Managing Director, Family Office Executive, CIBC Private Wealth Management
  • Karen Fleming, Director, BKD
  • Victor Hicks, Investment Advisor, BMO Family Office

  • Moderated by Lynne Born, CEO, Ocean Tree Strategies

10:50 AM CT: Peer Groups: Talent (Recruiting, Compensation, Diversity)

Facilitated peer groups (Zoom rooms) discussing the following questions:

  • How do you benchmark your compensation?
  • What incentives seem to resonate most with new hires?
  • What are the most valued benefits you offer your team? How do you gauge their value with employees? (flexibility, casual dress, perks in the office)

11:35 AM CT: Mid-day break

1:00 PM CT: Nurturing Your Talent & Culture

Whether the pandemic threw your culture into pandemonium or emphasized its strength, we all can agree it has opened new avenues for change. Questions have emerged about remote work, inclusivity, and better managing the mental and emotional well-being of staff.

In this session, we will hear from leaders who have a successful virtual and inclusive culture on how they do it and what they’ve learned. We also will unpack how firms are making real impact and increasing motivation from employee feedback.

Speakers

  • Jeff Strese, Principle, Jeff Strese Consulting Group
  • Lynne Born, CEO, Ocean Tree Strategies
  • Maria Chrin, Founder & Managing Partner, Circle Wealth Management
  • Moderated by Richard Joyner, President, Tolleson Wealth Management

Complete your Alliance Summit experience with a complimentary Executive Mixer & Wine Tasting. Together we will sample 5 wines shipped directly to you from Madrigal Family Winery, located in Calistoga, California. As professionals who serve families, we share a special appreciation for a family run operation and how that makes their product so unique.

While we taste, we will hear directly from the winemakers themselves to learn more about the wine making process and the winery family legacy,  During our time together, there will also be an opportunity to network with other Summit attendees and participate in a trivia game.

You will be given the opportunity to register for the Wine Tasting during your registration for the Summit.

Important Notes:

•Your wine will need an adult signature in order to be released upon arrival.
(UPS will send you tracking information.)
•Registration for the Executive Mixer is open until April 5th, even if you previously declined.
